CE Alaior reached the final of the Balearic Islands Cup, but lost out to CF Sant Rafel who go on to play in the Copa del Rey preliminary round.
The black and whites were in dreamland in Mallorca on Saturday, defeating CF Soller 1-0 in their semi-final courtesy of a Marc Anglada Krey goal on the stroke of half time.
Later in the day, Sant Rafel of Ibiza knocked out the second Mallorcan side, Ferriolense 4-3 on penalties to set up the final clash on Sunday for two teams forced to travel back to their home islands overnight.
As it was, Alaior were no match for Sant Rafel who ran out 3-0 winners. Alaior fell behind early on and so were chasing the game, with Sant Rafel doubling their lead on the hour mark. When Alaior were reduced to 10 men and went three down via the penalty spot on 72 minutes, the game was done.
The final in itself was a victory for the two sides, who in the build-up to the game had bemoaned the conditions favouring the Mallorcan sides who did not have to travel.
Elsewhere over the weekend, the two Menorcan sides in the Tercera RFEF Division got their seasons underway.
We were present as Mercadal held Formentera to a 1-1 draw, equalising through an own goal in the 78th minute having conceded inside the opening minute of the game.
But there was late heartbreak for Migjorn on the road – conceding a goal in the fifth minute of injury time to go down away at PE Sant Jordi, one of the teams they are fancied to be battling to avoid relegation.
Migjorn are starting only their second ever season in the Balearics division, having earned an immediate return to Tercera as Menorcan champions last year.
