Migjorn and Ferreries lead the way as season passes the half-way mark

CD Migjorn and CE Ferreries look set for a two-way battle for the Menorca league title, sitting six points clear as the league goes in to its second half.

Both won their games at the weekend, meaning they have now won nine of their 11 games to date. Ferreries eased to a 3-0 win at home to CCE Sant Lluis thanks to a hat-trick from captain Carlos Febrer, while Migjorn thumped Ciutadella CE 5-1.

Nothing had changed from the previous week, where at the half way point – that being when all 11 teams had played 10 games each – Migjorn and Ferreries boasted a six point lead over nearest rivals CE Alaior, who also won at the weekend, beating CF Norteno 2-0.

UD Mahon are just a point further behind thanks to their 2-1 win away at Penya Ciutadella. Alaior and UD Mahon will surely need a near perfect run in if they are to usurp either of the top two.

The top five teams will be involved in the end of season play-offs for promotion to Tercera Division, with fifth currently occupied by Atletico Villacarlos, who saw their game against Sporting Mahon controversially abandoned.

Sporting Mahon led 3-1 in the late stages when it was stopped due to a brawl, and that result standing would mean they would leapfrog Villacarlos in the table. It remains to be seen what the outcome of that incident will be.

Assuming Sporting Mahon does get that victory, they would sit fifth on 18 points, five ahead of Penya Ciutadella and six ahead of CD Menorca, although they do have a game in hand.
