The match between Atletico Villacarlos and Sporting Mahon hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons at the weekend, after being abandoned due to a mass brawl.
Sporting Mahon were leading 3-1 in the late stages when an aggressive foul committed by one of their players prompted a nasty reaction and a subsequent disturbance involving players and officials on and off the pitch.
It comes in the context of wider struggles being managed by the Balearics Football Federation (FFIB) regarding referee abuse and respect.
There is a video of the incident below:

In response, the FFIB have issued a lengthy statement condemning the images and that violence is not tolerated.
The statement read (translated): “The Football Federation of the Balearic Islands has expressed the most absolute and resounding condemnation of the regrettable images of aggression and violence produced during the Menorca match between Atco Villacarlos and Sporting de Mahón.
“The events that occurred are completely unacceptable, contrary to the fundamental values of sports and absolutely incompatible with the football that this Federation defends and promotes.
“The FFIB will make it clear that violent, unsportsmanlike behaviour or behaviour that attacks the physical integrity of players, technical teams, referees or fans will not be tolerated. Our permanent campaign against violence becomes more meaningful, facing its cap, giving images with the visibility of Menorca.
“These types of conduct damage the image of Balearic football and suppose a direct attack on the principles of respect, coexistence and youth, which are the foundations of our football.

“The Federation will act with the utmost diligence, rigour and forcefulness, posant all the events in coneixement of the competent disciplinary bodies and col·laborant fully so that it is purifying all the responsibilities that correspond, without exception.
“We encourage anyone who witnessed the incident and has any valuable information to bring it to the attention of the FFIB through the PUFS (For Safe Football) program, which launched just 10 days ago.
“The FFIB reaffirms its absolute commitment to the eradication of violence in sports and announces that it will not hesitate to adopt exemplary measures to guarantee that such shameful situations do not repeat themselves in football camps or on the streets of our Islands.
“Football must be a space of training, sport, respect and values, and the Balearic Islands Football Federation will work without rest to protect it.”
